HOW TO WEAR ALL BLACK WITHOUT FEELING BORING.

We all have our ‘go-to-fail-safe’ outfit or outfit formula. You know the one we turn when time constraints prevent outfit creativity. Or when mood effects our desire to put on anything other than pyjamas (good news is that pyjamas are kind becoming a fashion statement).

And I think it’s pretty safe to say that for many of us, that fail safe is some version of all black everything. Oh yes… black you are the most forgiving of colours, and hence I will forgive you for not even being a colour. I still love you regardless.

Even though I’m an all black everything fiend at times, there is definitely an art to making black feel more bangin’ and less blah. Did I just use banging in a blog post? I think I did… (forgive me, I got really caught up in my alliteration and couldn’t think of another positive word that started with ‘b’).

Anyway, rambling aside. I think the devil is in the details.
Think texture, shape and of course… accessories.

TEXTURE

One of my favourite past times is mixing and matching textures. It creates depth to an outfit, even if you are going for a monochrome look. A heavy knit with silky pants, or a silky top with leather/leather look pants. And don’t forget about denim (but really, who could?).

SHAPE

A classic black pair of pants is certainly a wardrobe staple, but why not consider the tiniest of kick flares or crops when buying your next pair. Or see example two, a classic black knit made a little less classic with a balloon sleeve and lace up detailing. It doesn’t take a lot, but simple deviances from the norms in shapes and fit add extra interest to an outfit with very little effort on your behalf (winning).

ACCESSORIES

First things first. I am obsessed with these boots. Velvet and shiny things? Oh my, I’ve died and gone to boot heaven. These are the perfect addition to spice up an outfit.

Secondly, in case you missed it, but neck scarves are well and truly having a moment. And again, are a very simple and effortless way to add a little something something to any outfit. And if you’re thinking you have to choose, scarf or necklace then you don’t. I personally couldn’t bear to part with my beautiful necklace from YCL for even a minute (it literally never leaves my body). So hence… layering.

Would love to hear your thoughts on what you would LOVE to see more of on tom girl & threads. You guys are what makes this worth while, so let me know in the comments.
