FIJI.

Part two of our honeymoon…

Escaping to another kind of island paradise.

We spent our time hopping around the Yasawa Islands, which although beautiful, seemed arid and sparse in comparison to the incredibly lush samoa. That said, we got far less rain during our time in Fiji.

The Yasawa Islands are accessible either through a private boat from the resort, or the island hopper (warning: this does take some time). The setup is pretty much one resort per island, and thus it is easy to enjoy a remote, private experience. However, this does also limit you in the sense that there is only one restaurant more meals.

We stayed at 3 different resorts/islands, which each had their own unique vibe and experience.

Octopus Resort

Really well set up for families, and hence there were a lot of families. Now this didn’t really bother myself or Tom, however that may not be your vibe. The snorkelling just out front of the resort was incredible and definitely where we saw the best sunsets. The food was great, a lot of options (even for us vegans). They have various activities running day to day, so you kind of luck out as to what days you are staying there. Unfortunately we missed out on the hill trek which takes you to the highest point on the island.

Manta Ray Resort

We stayed here in the hopes that we would luck out and see some manta rays swimming through the bay. No luck for us, but the snorkelling was the best I have ever had. Ever. Snorkelling straight out from the front of your jungle villa, you would go from this sparse desert to suddenly an abundant, lush, coral wonderland. We snorkelled for hours trailing holographic fish that sparkled in the crystal clear waters. It was honestly incredible.

Unlike octopus, the set up was a bit more humble – meals, accomodation etc. and the vibe was much more ‘backpackers’ than family or honeymooners.

Other than snorkelling (but lets be honest, if you’re anything like us, you won’t really need it) – they do have kayaks free to use, they run kayak tours and sunset tube floats.

Navutu Stars Resort

Our final destination and definitely the most luxe and the most ‘honeymoony’. Literally every couple there was on their honeymoon, or getting married on the island, or celebrating an anniversary. So this is definitely the place to go to with your lover.

Having all other couples there was actually really lovely. Although everyone generally kept to themselves, we would meet up for happy hour and chat.

The snorkelling was not as good here, and hence after the four nights we were getting a bit bored as activities were quite limited. I would highly recommend the boat trip to the limestone caves. The water is so clear and beautiful, and you can swim into an underwater cave and go exploring in complete darkness (don’t fear, there is a guide with a torch).

At the resort, you must get a massage from Toti. She was this absolutely beautiful Fijian woman with the strongest hands I have ever encountered. She also taught the morning yoga class, which was very gentle and suitable for anyone who has or hasn’t done yoga. But, I would recommend going because she gives you a mini massage at the end of every class which is just heavenly.

If I was to go back to Fiji, I would definitely explore some other parts. Some bigger islands with waterfalls and perhaps some more “things” to do. But the Yasawas are certainly perfect for that blissful island escape experience.

To swim, snorkel, read, sleep, sunbake and repeat.

Incredible photos! I just recently stayed at Octopus Resort too. I stayed as a solo traveler, and I think it was perfectly setup for solo travelers as well (along with families).
