HOW TO BUILD A TIMELESS WARDROBE.

Lately I’ve become fairly obsessed with the idea of building a timeless wardrobe. It all began when I ventured into Parisian/European style (via some books) and had a realisation that something they do really well, is having the simple building blocks of a wardrobe right and styling endless combinations from there. In Australia, I fear we crave the new. Every week for some people. Quick, fast fashion that either doesn’t last, or is such a statement we have an irrational fear of wearing it too frequently. And thus the cycle begins again.

I for one was guilty.  But now I’m moving towards investing in pieces that are high quality and versatile. I want to experiment more with styling and layering in new ways I hadn’t necessarily tried before in order to create fresh looks from pieces I already own, rather than feeling a perpetual need for the new.

As I’ve mentioned previously (i.e. right here), I’m shifting my focus towards ethical, sustainable fashion (trying… its certainly a journey). But for me, a part of that means also reducing consumption overall. Rather than having hundreds of pieces, I want some strong quality basics that will last, and can be worn with various seasonal trends I may choose to partake in.

So I’ve formulated my list, that I think would apply to most, as a list of those essential wardrobe items that every girl should own. Good quality, well fitting pieces, “if it’s not perfect, don’t buy it” kind of items.

NB this by no means implies a uniform wardrobe, or a lack of personal style. Instead it’s about having those effortless pieces from which to build our own unique style (aka how we pair things, and the accessories we choose to style our outfit with)

THE DENIM SKIRT.

A summer essential. Effortless to wear and can be styled SO many different ways to suit your own personal style.

KEY THINGS
1. Avoid distressing

A raw hem is fine, but you want this to be a timeless investment. A piece you can style up or down, and distressing creates a certain “look”.

2. Medium-Light wash
A medium to light wash is the perfect shade. Creates a nice vintage feel and pairs nicely with everything across both more “formal” and casual looks

3. Mid-High waist
This is my personal opinion, but you know your body than I do. Work with your shape, but as a general rule a mid-rise is more flattering than a low-waist.

4. A-line, boyfriend style
Again, personal preference and personal style considered. Going for a looser, a-line cut allows room for layering.

Vintage is always a good starting place too – hunt through your local stores. It might take some time to find the perfect fit, but boy oh boy, when you find it, it is happy days and trusted the denim WILL last (ps it already has).

THE WHITE SHIRT.

Not just for the office. And I would know, because I don’t work in one. A classic white button up is the definition of versatility and looking effortlessly ‘put together’.

Worn by itself with denim (of all varieties), styled up with a skirt or tailored pants, or simply thrown over your bikini. Layer it underneath or over sweaters… or dresses. You get it right… versatility galore.

THE VINTAGE CUT JEAN.

Slim, but not skinny. High waisted, but not too high waisted. Make it your own, but a more straight leg cut jean preferably in a mid-light wash is such a staple for me. A rigid denim that holds it shape vs hugging yours (not that thats a bad thing, just a different look).

THE BLACK BLAZER.

The classic black blazer, does it need any kind of introduction?

Probably not, but alas I will still elaborate. It was only a fairly recent purchase for me, but has become such a staple already. If you would consider your style more casual, then this is actually the perfect piece to elevate your already favourite outfits for times when you do need to be a little dressier (or more professional). Take me and my penchant for constantly wearing denim and vintage tees… add a blazer, and suddenly my outfit is somewhat more meeting appropriate.

KEY THINGS

1. Slightly oversized and long-line
A looser fit, with a slight long line, is still professional looking, but is a little more relaxed than something too fitted or structure and thus increases its wearability.

2. Steer clear of passing trends
i.e. flare sleeves, cut outs, peplums and all that stuff. The point of this piece is for you only own one, and for it to last for a number of seasons, so avoid anything that is reminiscent of a passing trend. Think simple, beautiful tailoring.

Also side note… Just get the damn thing dry cleaned.
As quite newbie to this whole quality clothing thing, I mistakenly threw mine in the wash. INSTANT REGRET. The shape is lost, and although I’d only spent just over $100 (on sale) I’m incredibly disappointed with myself to ruin such a good find.

THE BRETON STRIPE.

Do like the French do and stripe it up. Even if you don’t consider yourself a print person, I would venture to say that the humble stripe barely counts as a print. We see it every season, we love it every season. It’s never going anywhere. Pair it back with your favourite denim for a casual look, or go a little more preppy by styling with a pair of black tailored pants.

THE (faux) LEATHER JACKET.

I’ve specified faux, as I personally try to avoid leather items, however that is your personal choice. The request I would make if you are buying leather, is be intentional with where you shop from and ensure the style you purchase is a one-style-fits-always. If you buy one, and its the right now, you never need shop again.

On that note. Key things to look for.

KEY THINGS

1. Slight oversize boxy/biker shape
I personally think this is the most flattering and wearable style. Up to you depending on where you live, and whether you need to layer thicker jumpers underneath, as to how oversize you go (to keep some room in the arms).

2. Simple style – avoid passing trends.
Similarly here as with the blazer. Avoid anything that means you’ll outgrow it style wise. This means, studs and embroidery detailing. Whilst these may look appealing now, will you love them forever?

3. Avoid mixed fabrics

I sent this whole list with my sister in law when she went shopping in the US (she’s from there). She’s previously been in the mindset of bargain shopping and grabbing a steal. But is it really a steal if you only wear it once? So this time, she was determined to buy better quality pieces and shop strategically (still at a good price.. cause well… its America). When she got home, she was showing me what she succeeded in finding, and although the jacket she had found was beautiful and from a good brand, it had a ribbed panelling under the arms, which I knew would immediately limit the life of the jacket due to this fabrics lack of durability. My sister in law, although proud of her investments, felt disappointed as she didn’t even think of that (so… you know…you’ve been warned).

THE RIBBED SWEATER.

Good on its own and the perfect layering staple.
Throw it on under a slip dress or cami as the perfect in-between season piece to bring you from spring to winter. Key things to go for are a nice lightweight knit and slightly fitted (ideal for layering). Also given we’re aiming to maximise versatility, opt for neutrals i.e. off-white, cream, black or even grey.

TOP PICKS

THE BLACK TAILORED PANT.

Another effortlessly put-together wardrobe must have. Possibly even more comfortable than jeans, but slightly more versatile in that they can look more professional when needed versus the humble jean.

Key things to looks for:
1. Good quality fabric
2. Mid-high wast
3. Cropped just at the ankle (helps for more casual street style).
4. Straight, slim leg NOT skinny leg.

TOP PICKS

Kenzo pants | Kowtow Classic Pant | Good Studios Twill Pants

When Hansen & Gretel does a tailored pant, they are always amazing, so keep your eye out for those too.

THE WHITE TEE.

The humble white t-shirt. Songs have been written about it, bands named after it, so it goes without saying this is a wardrobe necessity. And for such a staple piece, it’s all about finding that balance between quality and value. Unlike some of the other pieces included in this article, a white tee, no matter how expensive, will last forever. So go for good quality fabric,  but at a reasonable price. And use common sense above all  i.e. a thicker fabric will be more durable and last longer than something super thin and lightweight.

Ideal fit here is all about your personal preference. Although I will admit I have two different styles, an slightly oversize boyfriend shape and a more fitted ribbed style. They create a different look, and I wear the style the best balances what I’m pairing it back wit (i.e. when wearing a wide leg pant, I opt for something a little more fitted).

TOP PICKS

Keep a look out for Zulu & Zephyr basics too- They are always epic.

THE GRAPHIC TEE.

This can take whatever form for you, but I’m always going to opt for vintage. The ultimate win in sustainable fashion and there is some so gratifying when you manage to find that perfect tee after time spent searching and rummaging.. I’ll admit this borders on the line of timeless and trend… But I feel like graphic tees come around every season and reflect the trends of the moment. So I’d suggest something that reflects your personality versus a passing trend.

THE DENIM SHORT.

What can I say?
This is a personal wardrobe favourite, and no doubt many of you feel the same. The summer staple, and it goes without saying that every girl needs that perfect pair (or 3).

Paired with a basic tee, white collared shirt, floaty blouse or oversize knits for that transpersonal period (for Australians at least). They can do no wrong.

Now although I would support more than one pair of denim shorts, particularly if you live in a warmer climate, it’s still key to look for quality and versatility and timelessness. Because even a denim short can “date” if done wrong.

KEY THINGS

1. Mid-high rise
Whatever feels most comfortable for you, but I personally find a mid-high rise more flattering and versatile than a low waisted style.

2. Medium-light wash
The perfect versatile wash fo denim, keeps things feeling fresh and summery.

3. Raw edge, but minimal distressing elsewhere
You want a vintage feel, but not OTT

4. Slouchier/boyfriend fit
Creates a more relaxed feel than something super fitted. Also makes it easier to tuck shirts into and balances your look when wearing more fitted or cropped tops.

5. Not too short
Now, this is slightly more personal preference, but I think a slighter longer, slouchier pair is a more flattering style and creates a more effortless look than something super short or fitted. But go with your style preference, the key is for you to FEEL 100% COMFORTABLE.

TOP PICKS

Now just assume, when it comes to denim, I’m always going to suggest hunting down some vintage first. It is honestly just the best (quality and sustainability wise).

BUT, here are some other faves

THE DENIM JACKET.

Continuing on with denim staples. The denim jacket needs no introduction. The effortless throw on piece, perfect for those “will I/won’t I be cold” moments.

A medium/light wash is ideal an personally, I would opt for an oversize boyfriend style (makes it even more perfect for layering).

Vintage first and foremost, as always..

Otherwise these are great too

THE BLACK SKINNY JEAN.

Now you can opt for a skinny, or ‘slim’ fit. The idea is for this to be your classic fit black jean that you can style up or down based on the occasion. I personally love a slim/cigarette fit as it’s still slim enough to be versatile and timeless. Remember you’re looking for that high-quality, perfect fit. So take your time on this one. You want them to last.

THE  ALL-ROUNDER BLACK DRESS.

Think less LBD, and more can wear everyday. Ideally to be dressed up or down.
Maybe a slip dress, midi or mini length, whatever fits your style best. But an effortless throw on piece to wear when you don’t know what to wear.

Personally I love a slip dress as it’s great for layering (i.e. singlets, t-shirts or ribbed knit layered underneath) to mix up your look. Throw it on with sneakers or sandals for a relaxed look or style it up with some heels or boots for a night time look.

Again, don’t settle for “good enough”. You want this to be that dress you can thrown on knowing that you will ALWAYS feel good wearing it.

THE BLACK SKIRT.

Now even I am still on the hunt for the perfect black skirt. It’s that wardrobe staple you can easily throw on with a tee and some sneakers for a relaxed look or with a midi length, you could pair it with a dressier top for a last minute occasion outfit (e.g. wedding, formal dinner etc).

The fit here is whatever will be most versatile within your own style and wardrobe. I’m not a maxi skirt kinda girl, but if you are and that is what you will get the most wear out of, do that. If you like more girly things, you could lean into some soft frills or pleating (whilst still keeping things timeless), or like me which is a little more tomboy-ish. I would opt for a sleek, structure a-line style so I can add my own street style edge.

Opt for a fabric that isn’t denim here. You want this to be a dressier option than your denim skirt. Leather or faux leather does work for this item, but obviously a less wearable option come summer for some of us.

Reformation Stratford Skirt | Jillian Boustred Wrap Skirt | Tori Midi Slip Skirt | TOME Bow Front Skirt | Chosen the label Midi Skirt | Georgia Alice Night Middi Skirt | Calvin Klein Tiered Maxi Skirt | Kowtow Audition Skirt

THE TAILORED SHORT.

As much as I’m a denim girl, I’ll admit there are times when a denim short just doesn’t cut it (blasphemy right?). But it’s true. Enter the tailored short. Still relaxed, comfortable,  easy to through on, but a style that you can style up a little more than ye ol’ denim cut offs.

KEY THINGS

1. High waisted
to whatever degree is most flattering for you body and style

2. Neutral Colour
Opt for black, cream/off-white or a tan colour. Remember we are trying to maximise versatility so keeping thing neutral here will mean you can pair this back with a whole range of tops to mix up your look.

3. Belt loops
This is kind of personal preference, but I think it’s nice to have the option. When you are building a timeless wardrobe, the easiest way to mix up your style is with accessories (i.e. different coloured and widths of belts)

4. A little Volume
What I mean by that is opting for a style that isn’t skin-tight/fitted. We’re challenging a kind of suiting look here, so something looser in the legs, and even with a bit of volume (pleats/structure in the fabric) makes this piece more interesting and chic.

5. Comfortable Length
Whatever this means for you, do that. But I would opt for a mid-thigh length over something particularly short.

THE BASICS.

The crux of any wardrobe. Often forming the basis of an outfit. If there is one thing to get right, its the basics (kind of applies to life, am I right?)

As with all of the above. Choose wisely, don’t settle for a “this will do” attitude, if you don’t love it, you won’t wear it (as much). And ideally spend little more $$ on the right pieces when you find them. I don’t just mean paying for brand name stuff for the sake of it. We want hight quality, durable pieces.

ON MY BASICS LIST
1. White Tee (see above)
2. Grey t-shirt
3. Black t-shirt
4. White singlet/cami
5. Black singlet/cami

But let’s save that for another day.

Let me know your thoughts.

Have I missed anything? What are your thoughts on building a timeless wardrobe?

Hi! I really enjoyed reading this. It’s always a challenge in Australia to buy simple and not go crazy with the sales but I agree with your concept! What books did you find most helpful in collating your post/wardrobe style?

Hi, So sorry for the late reply! Thanks so much for your feedback! I agree, it’s certainly a challenge – Australia is slowing coming around to sustainable fashion. In coming up with this post I went with my instinct of things I keep coming back to and wearing in my own wardrobe as well as some different articles I found online. I’ll have to get the name of the book off my sister in law – I borrowed it off her!

So glad to see a post encouraging sustainable and ethical fashion because style isn’t about ‘trends’. The environmental impact of fast fashion is enormous and disgusting. My only wish is that more girls would steer clear of using themselves and their instagram accounts as advertising for fast fashion which only fuels consumerism.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I couldn’t agree more – style is so much more than ‘trends’ and ‘brands’. I hope that as this movement gains traction more and more people will become aware of the impact of their choices when it comes to how we live our day to day lives – what we eat, what we buy, what we wear. I think it will take time, but hopefully sustainable fashion becomes more….well…fashionable.

I love this so much!! I’ve been thinking about doing this to my warderobe as well! I did have a request to make the short list, a long one. I love your way of giving advice on how they ”should” fit and pictures to inspire. Would be so happy if you did an extended version of those items too. Xx

    Hi Karissa,
Really loved that article, and your blog! I’m not usually one for blogs just because I find myself scrolling through one post at a time which is really time consuming . But love the layout of yours, a picture and a little blurb of each post is perfect. Maybe you could do a YouTube video of your style, like styling an item of clothing for different occasions? Love your effortless style! xx

Thanks so much for your kind words! I really appreciate the feedback, as I certainly can relate to your dilemma re: aimless scrolling. Videos is definitely another ballgame I’m not opposed to, but might work up to it (I’m a perfectionist haha so would want quality to be high). But thankyou SO much for your interest, this is something I would love to share more of!
